The Golden Opportunities Foundation was established in 2005, as a continuum set fourth in the day care center. Once many of the children graduated from Golden Gates Kindergarten, they still return to the center for before school/ after school care; for holiday school closing and during summer break. The parents trust the staff and want their child(ren) in a safe haven; thus many of the children return.
After center staff recognized that when some of the children would began local grammar schools, their play and conversation became more worldly and at times, aggressive. We wanted children to be allowed to be 'just kids' and not become jaded by the violence some had witnessed and we decided to formulate a program that enforced non-violence and not only 'self-love' but love of all life as well as the environment.
Unlike traditional school, this program is taught with mediums through art, literacy, folk tales and tradition, outings and trips; so that children can explore various cultures, options and ways to express themselves and understand others better. The program offers conflict resolution sketches, designing flower gardens in the community and building healthy relationships. Youth are given the opportunity to explore various aspects of both art and nature, and they will use their imaginations in combining the two in creative ways to beautify their community and excite them about respecting nature and all aspects of life.
